Process & Inspiration

My Process

I paint almost every day because I enjoy the intense focus and engagement. I explore different color combinations, techniques and styles. I have learned to embrace “mistakes” and surprises along the way. I have also learned to challenge my fears, quiet my inner critic and to carry on.

I start with a compositional sketch or group of colors. Layering iridescents, metallics and other bright colors is an important component. I lay down a color, let it dry and add other colors, scraping through the top layers so that the bottom color can peek through. The layers appear differently from various angles and lighting, leading the viewer to linger and look at details.

I seal the paintings with a UV filter so the colors will stay true. All paintings are framed and ready to hang. The frames are chosen to compliment each painting and enhance any location.

These acrylic paintings explore the intersections of, and connections between, my love of color and play. The abstracts are inspired by Georgia O’Keefe, Gustav Klimt and other lesser known artists. They are influenced by the birds-eye views in Aboriginal paintings. They are even inspired by the free-spirited compositions of childrens’ paintings.

Each painting is a puzzle and a surprise. A lot of time and thought is put into each creation. I hope you enjoy the results!

My Inspiration

Below are samples of art that children created in my elementary classes. Their amazing art always inspires me to paint.
